# Blackjack — Quick Reference

## Read the rules

Deck count, natural payout, dealer soft-17 and peek rules, doubling, splitting, split aces and surrender all matter. In the conventional model, a player bust loses even if the dealer later busts. An initial unsplit ace plus a ten-value card is a natural; a split-hand 21 has different treatment.

## Separate net winnings from total return

- A winning $10 natural earns $15 net at 3:2 or $12 at 6:5: $3 less. Total return is $25 or $22, including the stake.
- In the fresh-six-deck, simultaneous-naturals-push model, that payout change lowers expected return by about 1.36 percentage points per initial stake. This is a difference, not the full house edge.
- A double or split adds stakes. Distinguish initial action from total action.

## Insurance is a separate bet

At 2:1 net payout, insurance breaks even when the conditional ten-value hole-card chance is 1/3. In a fresh six-deck model:

| Observed cards | Winning / possible hole cards | Expected loss / insurance stake |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dealer ace only | 96 / 311 | 7.40% |
| Dealer ace plus player's two ten-value cards | 94 / 309 | 8.74% |
| Dealer ace plus player's 5 and 6 | 96 / 309 | 6.80% |

## Use the matching strategy

The [full guide](https://www.playbookrg.com/brand/content/games/blackjack/) includes hard, soft and pair tables for a stated 4–8-deck S17, dealer-peek, double-after-split and late-surrender reference. It hits hard 9 against 2; doubles against 3–6 when permitted; and distinguishes hit versus stand fallbacks. Split-ace and action restrictions still apply. Different rules need a different reference.

Cards leave a finite shoe, so shared hands are not all independent. Neither a remembered streak nor a neighbor's decision establishes the next unknown card. No learning time, universal edge or safe stake percentage is promised.
